Scientists Find Evidence of 'Diving' Tectonic Plates on Europa
Scientists have found evidence of plate tectonics on Jupiter's moon Europa. This indicates the first sign of this type of surface-shifting geological activity on a world other than Earth.
Researchers have clear visual evidence of Europa's icy crust expanding. However, they could not find areas where the old crust was destroyed to make room for the new. While examining Europa images taken by NASA's Galileo orbiter in the early 2000s, planetary geologists Simon Kattenhorn, of the University of Idaho, Moscow, and Louise Prockter, of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, discovered some unusual geological boundaries.
"We finally think we've found the answer."
Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that Earth's outer layer is made up of plates or blocks that move, which accounts for why mountain and volcanoes form and earthquakes happen.
The surface of Europa -- one of Jupiter's four largest moons and slightly smaller than Earth's moon -- is riddled with cracks and ridges. Surface blocks are known to have shifted in the same way blocks of Earth's outer ground layer on either side of the San Andreas fault move past each in California. Many parts of Europa's surface show evidence of extension, where wide bands miles wide formed as the surface ripped apart and fresh icy material from the underlying shell moved into the newly created gap -- a process akin to seafloor spreading on Earth.
On Earth, as new surface material forms at mid-ocean ridges, old material is destroyed at subduction zones, which are regions where two tectonic plates converge and overlap as one is forced under the other. However, despite the degree of extension evident on Europa's surface, researchers had not been able to determine how the surface could accommodate all the new material.
Scientists studying Europa often reconstruct the moon's surface blocks into their original configuration -- as with a jigsaw puzzle -- to get a picture of what the surface looked like before the disruption occurred.
Further evidence suggested the missing terrain moved under a second surface plate -- a scenario commonly seen on Earth at plate-tectonic boundaries.
The scientists believe the subducted area was absorbed into Europa's ice shell, which may be up to 20 miles (about 30 kilometers) thick, rather than breaking through it into Europa's underlying ocean. On Europa's relatively young surface -- about 40-90 million years old, on average -- scientists have seen evidence of material moving up from under the shell but, until now, no mechanism had been found for moving material back into the shell, and possibly into the large ocean below the ice.
"Europa may be more Earth-like than we imagined, if it has a global plate tectonic system," Kattenhorn says.
The team's results appear in the Sunday online edition of the journal Nature Geoscience.
In July, NASA issued an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for proposals for science instruments that could be carried aboard a future mission to Europa.
"Europa continues to reveal itself as a dynamic world with compelling similarities to our own planet Earth," said Curt Niebur, Outer Planets program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Studying Europa addresses fundamental questions about this potentially habitable icy moon and the search for life beyond Earth."
Previous scientific findings point to the existence of a liquid water ocean located under the moon's icy crust. This ocean covers Europa entirely and contains more liquid water than all of Earth's oceans combined.
NASA's Galileo spacecraft, launched in 1989, was the only space mission to make repeated visits to Europa, passing close by the moon about a dozen times.
Galileo's many firsts include discovering evidence for the existence of a saltwater ocean beneath Europa's icy surface. The mission officially was ended when Galileo plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere in September 2003 to prevent an impact with Europa. The mission was managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Aftermath of Colossal Impact Spotted Around Sunlike Star
The researchers detected a huge disk of dusty debris around a sunlike star called NGC-2547 ID8, which lies about 1,140 light-years from Earth in the constellation Vela.
The cloud was likely spawned when two planetary building blocks slammed into each other just two years ago or so, scientists said.
"This is the first detection of a planetary impact outside of our own solar system," study lead author Huan Meng, of the University of Arizona in Tucson, told Space.com.

A giant black hole may have hurled a star cluster toward us at record speed
Found: The Fastest-Approaching Object in the Universe
A giant black hole may have hurled a star cluster toward us at record speed
GARGANTUAN GALAXY: M87's central black hole may be shooting out more than just the blue jet seen here.
Hubble Space Telescope.
NASA and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)
Most of the universe is rushing away from us.
It's not that we're particularly repellent; it's just that the universe is expanding, pushing most other galaxies away.
Now astronomers have accidentally discovered the greatest blueshift ever seen, in a star cluster that a giant black hole may have catapulted our way.
Over small distances gravity has reversed the universe's expansion, so modest blueshifts are common.
Not even the Local Group —the collection of approximately 75 galaxies that includes the Milky Way—expands.
In fact, the Local Group's largest member, the Andromeda Galaxy, is moving toward us : it has a blueshift of 300 kilometers per second.
Yet astronomers have spotted an object far beyond the Local Group's borders with a blueshift of 1,026 kilometers per second, far surpassing the previous record of 780 kps set by a star in the Andromeda Galaxy.
"It's always fun to be at the extreme," says Nelson Caldwell, an astronomer at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who made not just this discovery but the earlier one as well.
Caldwell and his colleagues were measuring Doppler shifts of star clusters around M87, a giant elliptical galaxy located at the heart of the Virgo Cluster, 54 million light-years from Earth.
Unlike the Local Group, which holds only two giant galaxies—Andromeda and our own Milky Way—the Virgo cluster has dozens of large galaxies.
According to an idea proposed two decades earlier , when a binary star system skirts close enough to a black hole, one star falls in, losing a large amount of energy; in order to conserve energy, the other star shoots away at high speed.
If M87's black hole actually consists of two black holes orbiting each other, they could fling away a star cluster that strayed too near.
When its central black hole was still two separate supermassive black holes, it could have hurled the star cluster away.

Glory on Venus Cloud Tops and the Unkown UV Absorber,
A rainbow-like light phenomenon observed on Venus cloud tops helps to identify the components of the planet’s acidic cloud cover.
When travelling above the clouds, airplane passengers sometimes witness a glory: a light phenomenon similar to a ring-shaped rainbow.
Droplets in the clouds back-scattering the sunlight are responsible for this appearance.
A team of scientists led by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen have now fully imaged a glory on Venus – and thus for the first time on a planet other than Earth.
The data was obtained by ESA’s space probe Venus Express.
The data imply that the sulfuric acid in Venus’ cloud tops could additionally contain pure sulfur or iron chloride - and may help solve one of the oldest mysteries of Venus research.
The glory on Venus cloud tops in false colors.
The center of the concentric colored circles is the pale yellow.
The data were recorded on July 24th, 2011.
Not only visible light, but all wavelengths contribute to the glory.
In order to also make the ultraviolet and infrared contributions visible, in this false color representation each wavelength in the camera data is accounted for by a different color.
The list of possible candidates for the unknown substance is long: for example hydrobromic acid, amorphous sulfur, gaseous chloride and even bacteria have been suggested.
The droplets in the clouds scatter the sunlight back; the observer sees his own shadow on the cloud tops surrounded by colorful concentric circles.
Since April 2011, the Venus Express spacecraft, that has been orbiting Venus since 2006, has been maneuvered into a suitable observing position more than twelve times.

Death stars in Orion blast planets before they even form
Young stars in the Orion Nebula get their potential planet-forming dust and gas blasted away if they’re near enough to ‘death stars’ – massive O-type stars that emit fierce ultraviolet radiation.
This artist’s concept shows two proplyds, or protostars, around a massive O-type star.
The nearer proplyd is having its planet-forming dust and gas blasted away by the radiation from the star.
The farther proplyd is able to retain its planet-making potential.
The Orion Nebula is home to hundreds of young stars and even younger protostars known as proplyds.
Many of these nascent systems will go on to develop planets, while others will have their planet-forming dust and gas blasted away by the fierce ultraviolet radiation emitted by massive O-type stars that lurk nearby.
A team of astronomers from Canada and the United States has used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the often deadly relationship between highly luminous O-type stars and nearby protostars in the Orion Nebula.
Their data reveal that protostars within 0.1 light-years (about 600 billion miles) of an O-type star are doomed to have their cocoons of dust and gas stripped away in just a few millions years, much faster than planets are able to form.
“O-type stars, which are really monsters compared to our sun, emit tremendous amounts of ultraviolet radiation and this can play havoc during the development of young planetary systems,” remarked Rita Mann, an astronomer with the National Research Council of Canada in Victoria, and lead author on a paper in the Astrophysical Journal.
“Using ALMA, we looked at dozens of embryonic stars with planet-forming potential and, for the first time, found clear indications where protoplanetary disks simply vanished under the intense glow of a neighboring massive star.”
Many, if not all, sun-like stars are born in crowded stellar nurseries similar to the Orion Nebula.
Over the course of just a few million years, grains of dust and reservoirs of gas combine into larger, denser bodies.
Astronomers believe that massive yet short-lived stars in and around large interstellar clouds are essential for this ongoing process of star formation.
At the end of their lives, massive stars explode as supernovas, seeding the surrounding area with dust and heavy elements that will get taken up in the next generation of stars.
These explosions also provide the kick necessary to initiate a new round of star and planet formation.

Black Hole Winds Provide Clues to Early Galaxies
Startlingly powerful black hole jets are erupting in a nearby galaxy.
Surprisingly powerful x-ray jets blast out from a large black hole in a nearby galaxy, astronomers report.
Astronomers expect it will offer insight into the formation of the star-stuffed conglomerations that later grew into galaxies such as our own Milky Way.

"This confirms and improves on previous results, and it is important, as it shows how [ultraluminous black holes] can impact on their host environment, which could be an important feedback mechanism in the history of galaxy evolution," says astronomer Andrew Sutton of the United Kingdom's Durham University, who was not on the study team.

New Technique Finds Water in Exoplanet Atmospheres
As more and more exoplanets are identified and confirmed by various observational methods, the still-elusive “holy grail” is the discovery of a truly Earthlike world… one of the hallmarks of which is the presence of liquid water.
And while it’s true that water has been identified in the thick atmospheres of “hot Jupiter” exoplanets before , a new technique has now been used to spot its spectral signature in yet another giant world outside our solar system — potentially paving the way for even more such discoveries.
Researchers from Caltech, Penn State University, the Naval Research Laboratory, the University of Arizona, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have teamed up in an NSF-funded project to develop a new way to identify the presence of water in exoplanet atmospheres.
Previous methods relied on specific instances such as when the exoplanets — at this point all “hot Jupiters,” gaseous planets that orbit closely to their host stars — were in the process of transiting their stars as viewed from Earth.

A new study shows that white dwarfs exploding as type Ia supernovae have a range of masses.
Standard-candle supernovae are still standard, but why.
A new study shows that white dwarfs exploding as type Ia supernovae have a range of masses.
Type Ia supernovae result from the explosions of white dwarf stars.
Theoretical models (dashed black lines) seek to account for the differences, for example why faint supernovae fade quickly and bright supernovae fade slowly.
A new analysis by the Nearby Supernova Factory indicates that when peak brightnesses are accounted for, as shown in the upper graph, the late-time behaviors of faint and bright supernovae provide solid evidence that the white dwarfs that caused the explosions had different masses, even though the resulting blasts are all “standard candles.”
Sixteen years ago, two teams of supernova hunters, one led by Saul Perlmutter of the U.S.
The assumption was that carbon-oxygen white dwarf stars, the progenitors of the supernovae, capture additional mass by stripping it from a companion star or by merging with another white dwarf.
When they approach the Chandrasekhar limit (40 percent more massive than our Sun), they experience thermonuclear runaway.
“The Chandrasekhar mass limit has long been put forward by cosmologists as the most likely reason why type Ia supernovae brightnesses are so uniform, and more importantly, why they are not expected to change systematically at higher redshifts,” said Greg Aldering, who leads the international Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) based in Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division.
“The Chandrasekhar limit is set by quantum mechanics and must apply equally, even for the most distant supernovae.”
But a new analysis of normal type Ia supernovae, led by SNfactory member Richard Scalzo of the Australian National University, shows that in fact they have a range of masses.
Most are near or slightly below the Chandrasekhar mass, and about 1 percent somehow manage to exceed it.
